A dental crown becomes necessary when a tooth is so badly damaged, for example by decay or a fracture, that a filling can no longer stabilise and protect it adequately. It covers the entire visible part of the tooth. A crown is also necessary after root canal treatment, as the tooth becomes more brittle and prone to fracture afterwards. The crown protects the weakened tooth and restores both its function and its appearance.
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root, usually made of titanium, which is surgically placed in the jawbone. Once it has healed in, it serves as a stable base for a crown, bridge or denture, permanently replacing missing teeth.
With good oral hygiene and regular care, both crowns and implants can last many years, often even decades. How long they last also depends on individual factors.
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic and is usually pain-free. After the procedure, there may be slight swelling or pain, which can be easily controlled with medication.
Yes, we place great importance on aesthetics. Modern crowns and implant restorations, especially those made of ceramic, are perfectly matched in colour and shape to your natural teeth, so they are barely distinguishable from real teeth.
