Maybe it started with one postponed appointment. Then came a busy year, and then another. At some point so much time had passed since your last visit to the dentist that even thinking about it felt uncomfortable. Perhaps you are now noticing that something is not right: a sensitive tooth, gums that bleed, or a gap you would rather hide behind your hand when you laugh.
Often the hardest part is not the treatment but the first step. Many people keep putting it off because they feel ashamed and are afraid of being judged for the state of their teeth. If that sounds familiar, there is one thing we want you to know: you are not alone. And with us, you do not have to justify anything.
In this article you will learn why so many people avoid the dentist for years, what a fresh start typically looks like and how we support you at our practice in Pfalzen.
Why so many people stay away for so long
The reasons for a long break are as varied as people themselves: a bad experience as a child, fear of pain or of the noises, a packed daily life, worries about costs, or simply the feeling that it is “too late” now. These reasons often feed each other. The longer the break, the greater the shame, and the greater the shame, the harder it becomes to pick up the phone.
For dentists, situations like this are not the exception but part of everyday work. Someone who has not been in for a long time is not a “difficult case” but a person who has decided to do something good for themselves. That is exactly how we see it too: with us, you are treated as a person, not as a patient.
Why waiting rarely helps
Unfortunately, dental problems do not go away on their own. Tooth decay usually keeps progressing slowly, gum inflammation can quietly develop into periodontitis, and inflamed teeth can eventually cause severe pain. We are not telling you this to scare you, but to encourage you: the sooner you take the first step, the more options there usually are to keep your own teeth. And even if there is more to do, there are good solutions today, from fillings and root canal treatment to crowns and implants.
What a fresh start typically looks like
A fresh start at the dentist does not happen in a single day. It usually follows a clear order, so you always know what comes next:
- The conversation: First, it is all about you. What is weighing on you, what are you afraid of, what would you like? Everything can be said here, including the shame.
- Examination and diagnostics: Next, the dentist gets an overview. X-rays show what cannot be seen with the naked eye, such as decay between the teeth or inflammation at the root tips.
- The plan: The findings are turned into a treatment plan. You learn what is urgent, what can wait and which options there are. You are part of every decision.
- Treatment in stages: Usually, whatever causes discomfort or puts your teeth at risk is treated first. The other treatments then follow step by step, up to dental prosthetics if they are needed.
- Aftercare: Regular check-ups and preventive care make sure you never have to start from scratch again.
How we work at our practice
For anxious patients with a strong fear of the dentist, we work with the 3-T method, an approach in three gentle steps:
- T1, arriving and building trust: Your first contact can be by phone, email or WhatsApp, and anonymously if you wish. At your first appointment you talk calmly with Dr. Jule Hirte about your fears and questions, in a reassuring setting without a dental chair. Using a 3D X-ray, we assess the condition of your teeth and draw up an initial plan together, with no pressure at all.
- T2, the treatment: When you are ready, we plan the procedure, either at our practice or at the Brixsana. To help you relax, you can choose between nitrous oxide (laughing gas), twilight sedation (conscious sedation) or general anaesthesia. We decide together which option suits you best.
- T3, completion: Finally comes the follow-up check or the fitting of your permanent dental prosthesis. For this appointment, sedation is usually no longer necessary. And if some anxiety remains, we continue to support you with care.
Even if you are not very anxious and have simply not been in for a long time, the same applies: your first appointment is for getting to know each other, talking and an initial examination. Please allow around 30 to 60 minutes. Treatment only begins once you feel ready and everything has been discussed. We explain every step, listen to you and set the pace together. For crowns and other restorations we use digital impressions with an intraoral scanner, so there is no impression material that could trigger your gag reflex. And we do not promise anything we cannot keep, especially when it comes to costs.
Your first step
Today you do not have to decide anything except one thing: to get in touch. Whether you book an appointment straight away or would first like to ask a few questions, both are perfectly fine. For your first appointment, please bring your health insurance card, your medication list if you have one, and any old X-rays or previous findings. Our practice is in Pfalzen near Bruneck and is easy to reach from all over the Puster Valley, including by public transport.
Book your appointment online or contact us by phone or WhatsApp. If taking this step still feels hard: your first contact can be anonymous if you prefer. You will find all the options on our contact page. We look forward to meeting you, without any judgement.
